In May 2026, a study by Bernet et al. on Mount Kenya atmospheric observations was published in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics.
The study presents multi-year measurements of greenhouse gases and pollutants (CO2, CH4, CO, O3, and black carbon) at the Mount Kenya GAW station, a uniquely positioned tropical site that captures air masses from both hemispheres. It reveals increasing trends in key greenhouse gases, highlights strong seasonal variability, and identifies emission sources such as household energy use, industry, agriculture, and seasonal biomass burning. Overall, the findings demonstrate the importance of sustained, regionally distributed observations to improve emission estimates, validate atmospheric models, and guide future observational strategies.
